According to Statistics Iceland the number of Icelanders grew by 1% in 2014, from 325,671 on 1 January 2014 to 329,100 on 1 January 2015. Two thirds of the population growth was due to natural growth, while a third was due to immigration.
According to Statistics Iceland 4,375 children were born in Iceland in 2014, while 2,049 people passed away, resulting in a population increase of 2,271. At the same time 5,875 people moved away from Iceland compared while 6,988 people moved to the country, resulting in a population increase of 1,113.
The growing immigration over the past 10-15 years has resulted in a dramatically more diverse society. On 1 January 2012 39,223 Icelanders, or 12% of the population, had been born abroad. Foreign nationals make up 7.4% of the population. The largest group of the 22,294 foreign nationals in Iceland were Poles.
