The latest landscape video from local doctor and environmental activist Ólafur Már Björnsson is in a category of its own. The video which Ólafur released on Vimeo earlier this fall is called Tungnaá – True Colors, and features aerial shots of one of the largest glacial meltwater rivers of the Central Highlands.
Tungná originates in the western part of Vatnajökull glacier, carrying meltwater from one of the outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull to the sea. The river runs to the sout-west from Vatnajökull, across the black volcanic deserts of the Central Highlands. Bordered by volcanic craters the milky white glacial meltwater meanders across the sands, creating spectacular views. As Ólafur Már explains:
The river runs on top of the mid-Atlantic Rigde and bends around old volcanic craters lined up on the Ridge. Birds Eye View reveals milky white colours, the blue colours of numerous fresh water siderivers and the fragile summer vegetation with its green and brown colors….Setting the stage for a spectacular show
The video is nothing short of breathtaking: Choose HD, full-screen and sit back to enjoy the otherworldly beauty of the Central Highlands.
