The northern gannet population in Iceland has increased by 2 percent in the past 30 years, reports Morgunblaðið newspaper.

“The population trend is increasing, mostly because they are not being killed for their meat and feathers anymore. Man has always had a tendency to hunt what’s closest to them, especially if it's big and fat like the gannet,” says professor Arnþór Garðarsson, who’s been monitoring the gannet population in Iceland for years.

The gannet population is apparently growing between 3% and 5% a year, worldwide.
