Páll Matthíasson, CEO of the National University Hospital of Iceland, claims the hospital needs at least 100 extra nurses in order for it to be fully staffed. However, despite the hospital’s willingness to hire more nurses, there simply aren’t enough of them around.

According to the National Broadcasting Service, hospital management hopes that with improved work conditions and better pay, people will begin to see nursing as a feasible career choice.

From a financial point of view, Páll says, it is far more efficient to get more nurses on duty rather than forcing tired employees to work overtime. Also, more nurse attention leads to better patient outcomes.
