The National Gallery of Iceland celebrates its 130th anniversary with a retrospective exhibition. Admission is free until Sunday, October 19.
Illugi Gunnarsson, Minister of Education, Science and Culture, hosted a public ceremony on Thursday to mark the beginning of the anniversary celebrations.
The National Gallery was founded in 1884 in Copenhagen, Denmark, by lawyer and art lover Björn Bjarnarson. The museum remained an independent institution from its inception and until 1916 when Alþingi made it part of the National Heritage Museum.
Today the museum’s collection counts around ten thousand art pieces by most major Icelandic artists.
