The Mountain becomes the strongest Viking to have ever lived 2325

Strongman Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, aka the Mountain from the television series Game of Thrones, recently broke a 1,000 year old record by carrying a log weighing 600 kilos (1323 lbs) for five steps, thus becoming the World’s Strongest Viking – ever!

As is recounted in ‘Orms þáttur Stórólfssonar’ an Icelandic Viking named Ormur Stórólfsson once carried a log weighing around 600 kilos on his back for three steps before his back gave out from the heavy load. Ormur and his father were well known for their incredible strength. Once, when visiting Eiríkur, the earl of Trondheim in Norway, the earl and his men came across a ship’s mast lying about. The earl was eager to learn how many men were needed to lift the huge log. It took sixty men to lift the great mast so that Ormur could get under it, then, one by one the men stepped from under the log, leaving only Ormur to hold it. The Viking then proceeded to carry the log for three steps before his back gave out.

Ormur’s record stood unbroken for over a millennium, until Hafþór shouldered the log for FIVE steps. My back held up fine! the strongman later proclaimed on his Instagram account.
