The monster off-roaders of the Icelandic Formula Off-Road ride into Hella, a village in South Iceland, on May 1st for a two-day anniversary celebration.
The Off-Road Formula is a form of off-road racing 4wd created in Iceland, by Icelanders. The Hella event is the first round of this year's official national championship, with several races scheduled during the summer months.
In addition to the official championship round on Friday, there is a special competition and show on Saturday May 2nd, as this year marks a 50-year anniversary of the sport in Iceland.
The sport’s biggest current talents will test their skill against some of Iceland’s older off-road legends, who are getting behind the wheel again for the special event.
The drivers will scale almost vertical hills, make a splash in the marsh area and see who can skim furthest along a river, some in their monster trucks, others on motorbikes or snowmobiles.
All activity takes place within an especially designated competition area.
Engines will be roaring at 13 (1pm) Friday 1st when the championship round starts. Tickets are 1.500 ISK (10EUR/11).
The town Hella is located 94 km (58 mi) to the east of Reykjavík on Route 1 (the Ring Road), between towns Selfoss and Hvolsvöllur.
