In an interview on mbl.is Pétur Halldórsson, the exhibition manager of breeding horses at The National Icelandic Horse Competition, states that the Icelandic horse is clearly growing in size. Pétur has analyzed data that has been compiled from the last few years, which clearly indicates that Icelandic horse is growing.
Most of the measurements taken from the withers of the horses have revealed dramatic increases in a short period of time. When prompted for the reason why the Icelandic horse has been growing, Pétur replied: “there can be many factors. It is a sought out quality to have horses with high shoulders and long, slim necks. These breeding horses are in high demand and mature quickly. Excellent treatment might be another factor”.
One horse in particular at the competition drew considerable attraction due to his size. The horse Svaði from Hólum measured 153 centimeters from his withers and his trainer Metthe Maneseth said on mbl.is that “his size does not hamper him but large (Icelandic) horses like him need longer time to build up their muscles for certain movements”.
