The Icelandic Art Centre, Kynningarmiðstöð íslenskrar myndlistar, has asked Venetian authorities for 360 thousand Euros (398,481 US dollars) as compensation for having shut down Iceland’s contribution to this year’s Venice Biennale, reports Vísir. The installation, named The Mosque: First Mosque in the Historic City of Venice, was closed down by local authorities in May, two weeks after it opened its doors to the public.

The installation, located in a former Catholic church in the Cannaregio neighbourhood, was to serve as a place of activity for the Venice Muslim Community and included educational and cultural programmes for the public. It was to stay open until November but was closed down after two weeks as local police considered it to a security threat.

Court hearing will take place in Venice tomorrow, Wednesday, and is expected to hand down a decision some days later.
