The Iceland Touring Association, Ferðafélag Íslands, criticises construction plans near Landmannalaugar hot springs in the central highlands, reports RÚV. The area is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Iceland and is currently on UNESCO’s waiting list for recognition as a World Heritage Site. More than 80 thousand guests visit the Landmannalaugar area annually and that number is expected to continue to rise over the next years. The Iceland Touring Association, however, proposes that the location of the camping site and facilities be closer to Grænagil (Green Ridge), that way the close proximity to the hot springs is kept but tents will be hidden from plain view. The association also points out that the ground near Sólvangur is extremely sensitive and can easily be damaged beyond repair.

The Iceland Touring Association was founded in 1927 and its aim is to promote and organize travelling within Iceland.
