The Icelandic Government will step in and enact a law banning the strike of mechanics at Icelandair if negotiations between the carrier and the mechanics union do not reach an agreement before noon tomorrow.

Icelandair's mechanics staged a 24 hours work stoppage from 6 am GMT on Monday, affecting 12,000 travelers, and are plannig a full blown strike from Thursday June 19th.

Mediated negotiations between the carrier and the mechanics union have been ongoing for months but have proven to be unsuccessful.

In May the Government banned the strike of pilots at Icelandair, Iceland's biggest airline, citing the damaging effect of the pilots' actions to the Icelandic economy.
