Today is the 26th consecutive day of the eruption in the Bárðarbunga volcanic system in Iceland's central highlands. According to the Icelandic Met Office the eruption in Holuhraun lava field continues with similar rate as last few days and does not seem to be declining. The lava is only 200 meters (656 ft.) away from highland road Gæsavatnaleið.
The new lava field continues to grow and the lava production continues with the same strength. The new lava is 30-7 meters (90-21 feet) thick and covers an area over 40 square km (15.4 square mi) in size, almost half the size of Manhattan island.
IMO reports that the subsidence of the huge 11 km (6.8 mi) wide Bárðarbunga caldera, the sub-glacial volcano at the heart of the volcanic system, continues with same rate as before, as does the seismic activity. Ten earthquakes bigger then M3.0 were recorded since noon yesterday. The biggest one was M5.2 at 5 this morning.
