The Environment Agency of Iceland has given a film crew special permission for off-road driving, reports the National Broadcasting Service. The permit was issued on the condition that the advertisement feature a disclosure asserting that all off-road driving in Iceland is prohibited by law. This is the first time the agency permits off-road driving in such an instance.
The television commercial is for an automobile manufacturer and filming will take place on Ölfusá river in South Iceland.
Aðalbjörg Birna Guttormsdóttir with the Environment Agency explains that filming takes place on the river delta and will therefore not leave a mark on nature. “Filming takes place within a designated area on the river delta and the ocean tide will eventually erase all tire marks,” she said. Officials will ensure that rules are followed during filming.
According to Icelandic law, all off-road driving is strictly prohibited and is punishable by fine or imprisonment. Icelandic nature is considered extremely sensitive and off-road driving could cause irreversible damage to the landscape.
