The National University’s Institute of International Affairs and Reykjavík City Council have teamed up and created the first Icelandic Centre for Peace, Friðarsetur. Jón Gnarr, a comedian and the former mayor of Reykjavík, will serve as the centres first director. The centre is expected to open next autumn.
Jón was among those who were awarded the biennial Lennon Ono Grant for Peace in October 2014. On that occasion Ono called Jón a ‘great man’ who has helped change people’s opinion on politicians.
The comedian claims to be curious to find out how one establishes peace. “How does one coordinate peace as easily as people seem to organize conflict?” he said in an interview with Vísir.is.
