The Civil Defences in Iceland organized a meeting this weekend with representatives from all major companies involved in wholesale and food importation in Iceland. The reason was to discuss and create a plan to deal with a possible power outage caused by flooding, reports the National Broadcasting Service, RÚV.

Should Bárðarbunga, a large subglacial volcano, erupt it can cause massive flooding in Þjórsá river and the Tungnaársvæði region, an area where 40 percent of Iceland’s electricity is produced. A major power outage could have devastating impacts on Icelandic society.

“We have taken the comments to heart and take the situation very seriously,” said Magnús Óli Ólafsson, director of Innes, a leading importer and wholesaler in Iceland.
