Unrest in the Bárðarbunga area is likely to continue long after the Holuhraun eruption cools down, says geophysicist Ari Trausti Guðmundsson.
According to Vísir.is the Holuhraun eruption seems to be in remission and could run its course in a matter of days. However, the centre of Bárðarbunga caldera continues to subside underneath the 850 metre (2788 ft) thick ice cap which could cause an eruption at the edge of the caldera. Such an eruption “would melt large quantities of ice, leading to a major jökulhlaup, accompanied by ashfall.” (IMO)
This morning around 50 earthquakes had been detected since midnight. The largest were within magnitude three, their epicentre being at the rim of Bárðarbunga.
