The Catholic parish in Selfoss in South Iceland will soon get its own church, reports Fréttablaðið newspaper. The building will seat 200 people. An international appeal has been launched to raise money for the building cost.
In areas where the Catholic church does not have its own place of worship, congregations have held services in churches belonging to Iceland’s evangelic state church.

There are six Catholic churches in Iceland: Dómkrikja Krists konungs in central Reykjavík, Maríukirkja in the Breiðholt neighbourhood in Reykjavík, St. Jósefskirkja in Hafnarfjörður, St. Péturskikja in Akureyri, St. Þorlákskirkja in Reyðarfjörður, and kirkja heilags Jóhannesar Páls II in Reykjanesbær.
