The car accident at Ljósavatnsskarð: "I just stopped – there was nothing else I could have done" 4037

Jia Yi Wong, who miraculously survived a serious traffic accident on Ljósavatnsskarð road, North Iceland, on the 24 November, claims there was nothing she could have done to avoid collision with the oncoming vehicle.

The accident was caught on film by Jia Yi’s sister, Hui Yi, and published on Youtube, for their families to view. The video shows the moment the driver of a Mercedes Benz saloon car loses control of his vehicle, swerves on to the wrong side of the road and smashes into the sisters’ car.

“Our plan was to rent a car and drive around the Ring Road. I had been checking (the weather forecast) a lot before we drove off because I knew it was dangerous and had been warned by many people,” Jia Yi told the National Broadcasting Service.

On the morning of the accident the two sisters were informed by hotel staff that weather conditions for the day were good and that they could easily make a trip to Mývatn, North Iceland, and back.

The sisters had been using their mobile phones to film the trip and caught the accident on video. “After filming for about 20 minutes we see a car coming towards us. Then we saw the car begin to spin. I was driving very slowly and when I saw what was happening, I just stopped – there was nothing else I could have done. I thought about turning to try and avoid the car, but it was coming towards us so fast that I wouldn’t have been able to do it, so I just stopped,” she recalls.

“I will definitely not leave without my sister. I’m staying here until she has fully recovered.

Jia Yi says she has only watched the clip once: when she edited it to put up on Youtube for her family to see. The sisters are considered very lucky to have escaped the crash with their lives.

Another motorist arrived at the scene shortly after the accident and, according to Jia Yi, took charge of the situation. The man called 112 for help, comforted Jia Yi’s sister, and managed to pull the driver of the Mercedes Benz to safety moments before the car burst into flames. According to Jia Yi, other motorists also stopped to assist.

The sisters were supposed to leave Iceland on 27 November, but have no idea when they will be able to return home. Jia Yi’s sister is still recovering from the accident at the Akureyri hospital. Their brother arrived to Iceland some days ago to help his sister. “I will definitely not leave without my sister. I’m staying here until she has fully recovered,” Jia Yi said.
