The big bubbling red-orange Holuhraun lava lake 1931

11. des 2014 18:42

After continuous volcanic eruption for 74 days the forces of nature have created spectacular scenery in the Holuhraun lava field. The crater now reaches around 100 meters (328 ft.) into the sky, is at least 400 meters (1,312 ft.) long and 100 meters (328 ft.) wide.

Inside the crater a big red-orange lake of lava bubbles devilishly. At the crater's northeast end a massive river of lava overflows its lower ledge as can be seen in this great video by filmmaker Jón Gústavsson.

According to volcanologist Haraldur Sigurðsson, who has just returned from the area, the lava river is fast flowing, which indicates that the magma is quite thin.

The Scientific Advisory Board of the Icelandic Civil Protection reports that the new Holuhraun lava field continues to grow to the south. It now covers more than 70 square kilometers (27 sq. mi.)
