The banana harvest has begun at the Department of Horticulture in the Agricultural University of Iceland, Landbúnaðarháskólinn, reports Mbl.is. The bananas will be consumed by students and members of the faculty, and not sold.
“This year’s harvest is pretty good and the bananas are quite big. Soon the place will be packed with fruit,” said Elías Óskarsson, a member of the Department of Horticulture’s faculty. The University has around hundred banana plants in its tropical greenhouse.
Banana production in Iceland began in the 1930’s in greenhouses heated with geothermal energy. However, Iceland imports nearly all of the bananas consumed in the country.
