“It’s a magnificent construction as it is, but fully completed it’ll be even more imposing,” says author Jónas Friðrik, referring to a massive structure that towers over the village of Raufarhöfn in East Iceland. The structure is known as the Arctic Henge (Heimskautsgerðið) and is a huge sundial reminiscent to Stonehenge in England.

The project was initiated in 1996 by a local hoteliere, Erlingur Thoroddsen, who hoped the monument would attract travellers to the remote seaside town.

“There’s a steady stream of people visiting Heimskautsgerðið daily, so the plan is clearly working,” Jónas tells Channel 2 News.

Artist Haukur Halldórsson designed the monument which consists of a series of circles and basalt columns places according to a complex system based on Norse mythology.

Construction began in 2004 and when completed it will cover an area 52 metres (170 ft) in diameter.
