Should airport service employees begin their strike on June 6th as scheduled, the 16th Games of the Small States of Europe will likely be cancelled. The Games are set to take place in Iceland from June 1st until 6th.
Líney Rut Halldórsdóttir, the managing director of The National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland (ÍSÍ), explains that guests will be stuck in Iceland after the games should the strike take place. 1,200 people are expected to visit the country in connection with the sports event.
“We’ll keep our course for now. Hopefully, the two disputing parties will have come to a conclusion by the 31st of May and we’ll be able to proceed as planned,” she said.
The Games of the Small States of Europe take place every two years, and were first held in San Marino in 1985. Athletes compete in six individual sports: athletics, swimming, judo, shooting, tennis and table tennis, and two team sports; basketball and/or volley ball. Countries taking part in the games are Iceland, Andorra, Luxemburg, Monaco, San Marino, Cyprus, Montenegro, Malta, and Liechtenstein.
