The Icelandic Post and Telecom Administration encourages people charge their mobile communication devises in the case of power outages during today’s storm.
Hrafnkell V. Gíslason, the director of the Post and Telecom Administration tells the local newspaper Morgunblaðið that people should ensure all mobile telephones, laptops and other communication devices are fully charged so that people can stay in touch. All telecommunication companies have been alerted to make necessary preparations for power outages due to the storm.

Home telephones connected to a router will lose contact with the system in the case of a power outage, but mobile phones should continue to function despite a full power outage, as every tower has an emergency four hour power supply. Old landline phones will not be affected by the weather.
In a Facebook message which has already been shared nearly 1,200 times, Iceland Search and Rescue encourages people not to use their phones needlessly to minimize the load on the system. People are also encouraged to have flashlights, as well as candles and matches handy in the case of a power outage. People are also encouraged to secure any items outdoors, dig snow from drains to minimize the danger of flooding and close their drapes, as the strongest gusts can easily break windows.
