High school teachers in Iceland have been on strike since March 17th – or fifteen school days. The strike has caused 20,000 students to be out of school and around 1,500 teachers to be out of work.
Outgoing head of the Teacher’s Union in Iceland told ruv.is today that she believes an agreement will be reached today. When the negotiation committee left the tables yesterday things were looking up and should an agreement be signed today, schools will resume on Monday.
Whilst good news is coming from one education sector, bad news is reported from another. The University of Iceland Student’s Union has challenged the government to settle the labour dispute with University professors before a strike action will be put into effect.
The Student Union regrets that professors at the University feel forced to take this route, but reiterate the damaging affect a strike would have on students. Professors plan on going on strike during the final exam period, from April 25th until May 10th.
