The fourth Mt. Esja Ultra race takes place on June 20th. Competitors have to run a 7 kilometre (4.3 miles) loop eleven times. The race is considered the toughest single stage race in Iceland.

Halldóra Gyða Matthíasdóttir Proppé is the first woman to compete in the Mt. Esja Ultra race. “I’ve dreamt about competing in the race since its inception. It’s a huge challenge and I love nothing more than a good challenge and to try new things,” Halldóra told Morgunblaðið newspaper.

There are three distances available; the shortest is a 2-lap run up and down the mountain (14km, 1200m +elevation gain); a 5-lap run (35km, 3000m +elevation gain); and finally an 11-lap run (77km, 6600m + elevation gain). This year the Esja Marathon, a 42.2 kilometre course, will be added to the event. The marathon has few repetitions and will take runners through stunning scenery and amazing views over the capital.
