On Saturday night Search and Rescue teams from Eastern Iceland found the body of a Swiss traveller who had not been heard from since Tuesday. The man had fallen to his death while climbing a mountain in Seyðisfjörður fjord.
An experienced mountaineer
According to the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service the man was an experienced mountaineer and had been travelling in Iceland for several weeks. Search and Rescue teams were dispatched on Saturday afternoon when his wife contacted police after not having heard from him since Tuesday.
Fifty members of numerous Search and Rescue teams in Eastern Iceland participated in the search. A helicopter from the from the Icelandic Coast Guard was also sent from Reykjavík to assist with the search. The helicopter flew in search dogs from the Search and Rescue teams in the Capital Region.
The search focused on the mountains in the inner end of the fjord where the man‘s car had been spotted by the Fjarðarselsvirkjun hydro plant days earlier. The man‘s body was discovered at six in the afternoon on Saturday. Conditions indicate that the man had fallen off a cliff in the mountain.
