Swiss artist Christoph Büchel will represent Iceland at the Venice Biennial this year. Büchel’s project is called The Mosque: First Mosque in the Historic City of Venice and will be located within the Santa Maria della Misericordia church in Venice. The Icelandic Art Centre and the Ministry of Education announced the decision on Thursday.

The project will serve as a place of activity for the Venice Muslim Community and includes educational and cultural programmes for the public. The project is done in collaboration with Muslim associations in Venice and Iceland.

Artist Joan Jonas will represent the U.S. at the art fair. Her project, entitled ‘They Come to Us Without a Word‘, is inspired by the work of Icelandic Nobel laureate Halldór Laxness.
