Swimmer suffers hypothermia whilst swimming in Nauthólsvík, Reykjavík 3630

A swimmer was helped to an ambulance at Natuhólsvík beach, Reykjavík, today after suffering hypothermia, reports Morgunblaðið newspaper.
The woman was helped to shore by her swimming partner and transported to hospital where she received treatment for hypothermia.

According to Morgunblaðið, the temperature of the water is around 0.4 degrees Celsius (32 Fahrenheit). When it comes to swimming in the Atlantic, a good rule of thumb is not to stay in the water for longer than 2 minutes per temperature degree, i.e. if the temperature is 1 degree Celsius, one can stay in the water for 2 minutes.

Nauthólsvík is a popular spot for locals to go swimming in the ocean.  Reykjavík’s Sports and Leisure Department has issued instructions to insure safety. People are strongly advised not to enter the waters alone, to pay close attention to their swimming partner and to swim along the coast line.
