The Portuguese footballer, Christiano Ronaldo, who is also the second most popular person on Instagram, is the latest Íslandsvinur.

Íslandsvinur is one of these fun Icelandic terms which don't exist in other languages. It iterally translates as Friend of Iceland, and is used as a kind of honorary title to refer to any famous person who visits Iceland and likes the experience. The term was more common prior to the tourism boom when very few celebrities or famous people visited Iceland. Among celebrities who were bestowed the honorary title were David Bowie, Ronald Reagan, Martha Stewart and Quentin Tarantion

In recent years the list has gotten longer, or course, and Ronaldo is the latest member. Ronaldo and his girlfriend Georgina Rodriquez loved the experience and the scenery, based on photos they have on Instagram. Their itinierary included helicopter sightseeing, snowmobiling and of course some lounging in a hot tub.

A former enemy of Iceland
Ronaldo became one of the most hated enemies of Iceland during the 2016 EURO over his comments following Iceland's surprise tie with Portugal in its first match of the competition. Ronaldo's comments, which were described as whining by some commentarors, were seen as signs of the football star being a sore loser. Ronaldo accused the Icelandic team of showing small mentality, and predicted Iceland would not do well in the competiton. Iceland, of course, went on to crush one opponent after another, advancing to the quarter finals, and then qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.
