Sunniest start to May for 90 years in Reykjavík but the big chill refuses to back down 2810

5. ágú 2015 11:48

The first week of May is the sunniest in Reykjavík since weather records began in 1925.

People in the capital area have, of course, celebrated but are not really basking in the glorious sunshine as temperatures continue to be low. Last night it was freezing all over the country and according to the Icelandic Met Office’s (IMO) forecast it will be hovering above 0 degrees Celsius (32 F) in the capital today, but at least the sun will carry on shining.

In the north, east and the Westfjords the weather forecasts are a lot grimmer. Temperatures will stay below 0 C and inhabitants of Akureyri town and the surrounding area can even expect some snow in addition to the deep banks already there.

Some mountain roads in East Iceland remain closed due to snow.
