The nationality of the three travellers who were injured in a serious road accident on the Ring Road east of Kirkjubæjarklaustur village in South Iceland on Sunday has been released. The Police in South Iceland reports that the three travelers were from Taiwan and the United States. All three travelers are considered to be in critical condition.

A Taiwanese traveler was alone in one of the two cars, while two American travelers were in the second car. According to the local news site Vísir the Taiwanese traveler is 35 years old, born in 1983, while the two American travelers are 32 and 27 years old, born in 1986 and 1991.
Oddur Árnason, a Chief Superintendent for The Police in South Iceland told the National Broadcasting Service that it appears that the Taiwanese traveler was for some reason driving on the wrong side of the road when the accident took place.

The two cars then hit one another in a head-on collision. The Ring Road was closed for five hours while first responders arrived and the Police completed its investigation of the accident. All three travelers were airlifted by the Coast Guard to the National University Hospital in Reykjavík. They were conscious, but were still considered to be in critical condition.
It is not clear why the Taiwanese traveler was on the wrong side of the road, and whether he had only accidentally swerved to the wrong side. Less than a week ago a Dutch couple died in a tragic car accident in South Iceland. The head-on collision, which took place on Lyngdalsheiði heath on the Golden Circle, appears to have been caused by the young people having been on the wrong side of the road when they met a dump truck coming from the opposite direction.
