The summer of 2018 is already on the record as one of the worst ever in Iceland. May, June and July were the worst summer months ever recorded: Reykjavík saw less sunshine and more rain during those months than any time since scientific measurements began in the 19th century. Although August was unusually chilly it managed to deliver some much needed sunshine. The Icelandic Meteorological Office now reports that the summer of 2018 is only the worst since 1984.

According to the IMO Reykjavík saw 345 hours of sunshine in June, July and August, which is 235 hours less than the average sunshine in 2007-2017. The miserable summer of 2018 compares slightly better with the post-war average. In 1961-1990 Reykjavík received 160 hours more sun on average each summer.
