The Touring Club of Akureyri is planning a ski trip to Askja over the bank-holiday weekend, July 31-August 2. The reason, according to Hilmar Antonsson, the chairman of the touring club is simply the unusual amount of snow in the area.

Summer has not yet arrived: Askja lake is still frozen
Hilmar told the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service that he could not remember anything resembling this year’s conditions this late in the summer.

“There is more than enough snow in Askja. Everything is white and you can hardly spot a dark spot anywhere you look.” Hilmar tells RÚV, adding that it is not unusual to see snow in the Central Highlands, but that the layers of snow this year are very unusual. Hilmar points out that the lake in Askja is still frozen.

Relax after the tour in a newly discovered hidden natural bath
The trip will leave Akureyri by car on Friday July 31 at 17:00. The group will stay overnight at the lodge in Drekagil and on Saturday morning the group will get on the skis and walk to Askja lake. On Saturday night the group will then relax in a hidden natural bath which was recently discovered in the Holuhraun lava field.
