Sub-glacial eruption is not confirmed, a surveillance flight is being made 1400

13. mar 2023 20:04

The intensity of the activity in the Bárðarbunga volcanic system continues in similar manner as before. However it was slightly less than the night before.

According to the Icelandic Met Office total events automatically detected from midnight until 6.50 (6.50am) this morning are 400. Two events were detected in Barðarbunga caldera of magnitude 4.1 at 1.30 (1.30am) and 4 at 3.30 (3.30am). Most events recorded were located within the northernmost 10 km of the dike and few small earthquakes around Askja.

Crevasses and cauldrons were detected yesterday when an over-flight was made over the earthquake area. This could be a sign of an ongoing sub-glacial eruption. Another survailance flight is now being made. New information can be expected around 11 (11am).

UPDATE: Biggest earthquakes since midnight struck at 8.13 (8.13am): magnitude 5, close to Bárðarbunga caldera.
