The Icelandic health care system is the second best in the world, according to a new study published in the British medical journal Lancet. The researchers created a health care quality index on which Iceland ranks second only to the European microstate Andorra.

The quality index is based on data on access and quality of the health care provided as well as the rate of so-called amenable mortality, deaths that could theoretically have been avoided by timely and effective health care. Iceland scored a 94 out of a 100 on the index.

Behind Andorra and Iceland came Switzerland, Norway and Sweden. The Central African Republic had the lowest score on the index.

The US scored an 80 on the index, putting it at the bottom of the second decile, according to a report in the Washington Post. The UK scored an 85 on the index.
