A number of municipalities have agreed upon allowing students affected by the ongoing teacher’s strike free admission to swimming pools. This is done in a bid to try and keep students active during the strike. Among those are the communities of Reykjavík, Kópavogur, Akureyri and Mosfellsbær.
Members of the National Union of Teachers have been on strike for nearly a fortnight, seeing all grammar schools closed and around twenty thousand students out of school.
Grammar school teachers and the government have not been able to reach an agreement regarding teachers’ wages and the latter are surprised by the government’s lack of interest in solving the dispute. Agreement talks are ongoing.
