A Yellow Weather Alert has been issued for South East Iceland, effective from 16:00 today, Wednesday Dec 6 until 10:00 tomorrow, Thursday Dec 7. The Icelandic Meteorological Office is predicting strong gale force winds with isolated wind gusts which can pose danger to vehicles which catch wind. Travellers driving RVs, camper vans or cars pulling travel campers should show extreme caution or revise their travel plans.

The IMO is warning of Hazardous driving conditions in SE Iceland. People should expect northeasterly 15-25 m/s (33-56 mph) in areas close to Vatnajokull glacier, including the Ring Road from Lómagnúpur mountain to the town Höfn. The strongest winds will be in Öræfi region, south and west of Öræfajökull glacier where individual gust will exceed 35 m/s (78 mph). Winds of this strength can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles.
The wind in the South East will pick up tonight, as individual wind gusts will reach 45 m/s (100 mph). The weather will not improve until late tomorrow morning. By then, however, the Eastfjords will be in the grips of a snowstorm.
Sustained windspeeds of 15-23 m/s (33-51 mph) and individual gusts reaching 40 m/s (89 mph) with snowfall will create extremely challenging driving conditions, especially on mountain roads and heaths. A Yellow Weather Alert is in effect for the Eastfjords from 9:00 tomorrow morning, Thursday Dec 7 until 10:00 Friday morning December 8.
Drivers are also warned to expect on roads and blowing snow. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority reports that the entire Ring Road in South and South East Iceland is either icy or covered with snow, making the surface slippery. Travellers should show caution when traveling in South Iceland, and extra caution in the South East.
