The strike action by the Union of Public Servants, which is scheduled to begin on Thursday, will not only mean the state liquor monopoly stores will close, it will also cause cancelled classes and postponed midterms for over 13,000 students at the University of Iceland. The chairman of the Students Union claims University students are growing tired of strikes interrupting their studies.

If agreement is not reached before midnight on Wednesday in the negotiations between SFR, the Union of Public Servants, the union will commence strike action. Its members will be on strike on Thursdays and Fridays, as well as Mondays and Tuesdays, only showing up for work on Wednesdays. By mid-November the Union will go on full blown strike if agreement is not reached. Building supervisors at the University of Iceland are members of the union.

University President won't act as building supervisor and students tired of being pawns
Jón Atli Benediktsson, the President of the University of Iceland told the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service RÚV that since it is the responsibility of the building supervisors to open and close university buildings and classrooms the strike would mean the University would remain closed. “However, the supreme court ruled in 1986 that the University President could himself open and close classrooms and University buildings, but I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to intervene in the dispute.”

Aron Ólafsson, the chairman of the Students Union told RÚV that students were growing tired of being used as pawns in wage disputes, pointing out this was the third year in a row classes and exams at the university were disrupted by strikes.
