A tour company which offers diving tours in Silfra fissure in Þingvellir National Park has imposed strictrer safety rules. The decision was made after a foreign traveller in his sixties drowned while he was snorkling in the fissure. Four people have died at Silfra since 2010. In addition six serious accidents have taken place at the popular diving destination.

Dive.is, which is one of the companies which offers diving tours at the fissure, now requires everyone who is over sixty and those who have a history of medical problems to turn in a doctors note that they are fit to dive. Anyone who wants to snorkle or dive with the company noe has to have a physician fill out a form the company offers on its website.

The director of the company told the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service that the company wants to make sure it's customers understand that diving in the freezing water of the lava fissure is more challenging than diving in the warm waters of the caribbean. We want people to understand that it's nothing like sitting in a hot tub, the water is cold and the dive can be challenging.
The company is working on implementing even stricter rules to ensure the safety of its customers.
