One of Icelandair’s jets has been grounded since last week as pest control searched for a unidentified rodent crew had discovered on board. The creature, which is believed to have snuck on-board the plane at some foreign airport had decided to make the plane its home, rather than leave and make Iceland its new home.

Initially Icelandair staff believed the creature was a hamster or some other small rodent, but after the airline contacted the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority, which dispatched pest control to Keflavík, it became clear the rodent was a rat. The plane was grounded as professionals hunted down the unwelcome guest. The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, which has a long report on the story, these efforts were unsuccessful. Neither poison nor traps seemed to work on the rat which was finally caught and killed by a mechanic who was doing routine maintenance on the plane.

Icelandair has reported the incidence to the relevant authorities and completed a thorough investigation of the plane to ensure the rat didn’t cause any damage while on-board. The plane is reportedly back in service.
