Travellers who were heading for East or South East Iceland today should adjust their schedules to ensure they will be at their destination by dinner and avoid driving out on the roads tonight. The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued a storm warning for East and South East Iceland for tonight and tomorrow morning.

The IMO expects wind speeds in excess of 20 m/s (45 mph) in the Eastfjords and in South East Iceland, with far more powerful wind gusts along mountain sides. Since almost much of the ring road in this region runs along steep mountain sides conditions can easily become extremely difficult and dangerous.

Powerful wind gusts in this region can also blow gravel and stones, damaging cars and breaking windshields. Earlier this spring a similar storm in S.E. Iceland damaged numerous cars at Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon. Drivers can also potentially lose control of their vehicles in sudden powerful wind gusts. Individual gusts can reach hurricane force.
