The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued a storm warning for South and West Iceland for today, and East Iceland for tomorrow. Strong or severe gale can be expected in the south and west today, and a storm in the east tomorrow. Windspeeds will range between 15 and 23 m/s (33-51 mph).
Motorists are urged to show special caution while driving along mountain sides: The IMO is warning that wind speeds along Hafnarfjall mountain in West Iceland can reach 30-40 m/s (67-89 mph). Individual gusts which reach the power of a violent storm or even hurricane force can easily blow cars with a high center of gravity, such as camper vans, or pose danger to cars pulling caravans.
Travellers are urged to show caution when driving today, check the weather forecast and any weather warnings at the website of the Icelandic Meteorological Office. You can also check on road conditions at the site of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority. The IRCA also has a map with webcams and up-to-date notes of areas with strong wind gusts.
