Storm warning for area around Vík, S.Iceland today afternoon 6160

The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued a storm warning for South Iceland for today. The wind is expected to pick up this morning and peak early afternoon. 

Severe gale and storm at popular tourist destinations
Wind speeds in excess of 20 m/s (44 mph) can be expected at noon south of Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull glaciers, with the wind picking up speed during the afternoon, peaking sometime late afternoon or early evening when wind speeds will exceed 25 m/s (56 mph). Individual gusts can easily reach hurricane force.

The area in question includes several popular tourist destinations, including Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, the black sand beach Kirkjufjara and Reynisfjara and the village of Vík.

Today: Northeasterly wind, a moderate to strong breeze, 5-13 m/s (11-29 mph) in the morning with light snow showers in the north east, but mostly dry in other areas. Wind will pick up in the morning, strong breeze to fresh gale by afternoon, 10-18 m/s (22-40 mph) in the afternoon.

In South Iceland a severe to whole gale, 18-25 m/s (40-56 mph), with the strongest winds in Eyjafjöll region, south of Eyjafjallajökull glacier. 

Rain in south and east Iceland today, but mostly dry in other parts of the country areas.

Weekend: Rain or sleet, with a fresh breeze and temperatures above freezing in all parts of the country.
