A Yellow Weather Alert has been issued for Reykjavík effective from 7:00 am – 11:00 am tomorrow, Wednesday. The IMO warns drivers that strong winds, heavy snow, sleet and rain will make driving in the city challenging while the storm passes. Travellers are also warned to to expect strong winds on the Ring Road out of Reykjavík to South Iceland and on the highway to Keflavík Airport.

Potentially dangerous winds
The Road and Coastal Authority has also issued a travel warning for West Iceland. Sustained windspeeds of 23-28 m/s (51-63 mph), with snow and very limited visibility will make driving on the Ring Road from Reykjavík to South Iceland challenging. Strong winds and localized winds and windgusts exceeding 40 m/s (89 mph) on the Ring Road from Reykjavík to West Iceland can also pose serious danger to drivers.

The most powerful winds can be expected in the foothills of mount Esja north of Reykjavík and Hafnarfjall mountain south of the town of Borgarnes in West Iceland.
Winter travellers in Iceland are urged to pay close attention to the weather forecast, all weather alerts and road conditions as well as travel alerts from ICE -SAR before embarking on any travel outside urban areas.
