Police in Suðurnes District, which includes Keflavík airport and nearby fishing towns and villages, were called out to assist a foreign traveler who had gotten his rental vehicle stuck in the rough lava near the Blue Lagoon. The traveler had apparently driven right off the road into the lava field, with predictable consequences.
Based on the nature of the accident and the traveler's condition the officers suspected he was not in full command of his faculties and took him into custody. A check for controlled substances and alcohol consumption found that the traveler was both well above the legal limit for alcohol consumption, as well as testing positive for cannabis use.
It is not clear why the traveler drove right into the lava field, but we at Iceland Insider suspect that being stoned might have something to do with it!
