A statue of Danish cellist Erling Blöndal Bengtsson, by sculptor Ólöf Pálsdóttir, will be transported from its current location on the round-about near Háskólabíó cinema to Harpa Concert Hall. The move was a request from Erling’s widow. Erling passed away in June 2013.
The National Symphony Orchestra used to perform in Háskólabíó cinema for decades before Harpa was constructed.
“Our board received a request from Erling’s widow for his statue to be moved from Háskólabíó to Harpa, this is in correspondence to his final wish,” Halldór Guðmundsson, director of Harpa, wrote in a letter to the Cultural Committee of Reykjavík suggesting the statue be found a spot in front of the concert hall.
