A group of specialists recommends the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, north of Vatnajökull glacier, be expanded to include all of Torfajökull glacier and volcano. The group was appointed by the Ministry for the Environment and Natural Resources to evaluate the state of the Fjallabak area.

The group notes that tourism in the area has been allowed to expand without any official rules and regulations being imposed. They express concern for the area’s condition and urge authorities to strengthen its infrastructures to prevent further deterioration.

“Trails need to be strengthened and marked. Stricter rules and regulations also need to be imposed,” Sigrún Ágústsdóttir, the group’s foreman, told the National Broadcasting Service.

“The area around Torfajökull also needs to be protected and put under the Fjallabak Nature Reserve. Geographically speaking, the area is a rare gem.”
