Southeast Iceland sees driest spring and early summer in 85 years 3465

Skaftárhreppur district in the Southeast has seen record-low rainfall since spring, reports the National Broadcasting Service. Rainfall in Kirkjubæjarklaustur village in April, May and June was 25 % less than the yearly average – making it the driest spring and early summer since records started 85 years ago. The area is known to be the country’s wettest region.

Meteorologist Einar Sveinbjörnsson says the lack of rain and snowmelt this past spring is to blame for low river levels. A 10-kilometre-long part of Greinlækur, one of Iceland’s best trout rivers, has almost completely dried out, leaving only puddles with dying fish.

The draught has not only affected water levels in the region but also greatly damaged fields as well.
