Since 1982, the annual Músíktilraunir battle of the bands has been the main scene for up-and-coming bands in Iceland. Jónsi from Sigur Rós was there with the grunge band The Bee Spiders in the nineties, Emilíana Torrini with a band called Tjalz Gissur in 1993, and the now world-famous Of Monsters And Men won the competition in 2010.
This year’s Músíktilraunir was won by a trio from Mosfellsbær called Vio. Their music is guitar-driven, slow and mellow—a bit like what you might get by putting Pearl Jam and Sigur Rós into a blender.
Only time will tell if this is the first and last you hear of Vio, or if this is the start of something big.
Here are two songs by Vio. Enjoy!
