The Social Democratic Alliance (Samfylkingin) is gaining a momentum in Reykjavik. According to a poll conducted by the University of Iceland’s Social Science Research Institute for Morgunbladid Daily, the party would get 28% of the votes if city council elections were to happen today. Local government elections will be held throughout Iceland on Saturday, 31 May 2014.

As reported by ruv.is, this percentage would result in the Social Democrats having five representatives in Reykjavik City Council.

Support for The Independence Party (Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn) seems to be fading. The party would get 24.4% of the votes in City Council elections and four representatives according to the poll, which was conducted last week. Nearly 1200 people partook in the poll.

The Social Democratic Alliance forms the ruling coalition government for Reykjavík with The Best party (Besti flokkurinn) which will not run for the local government elections this spring. Its sister party, Bright future (Björt framtíð), will however paricipate in the elections and according to the poll 24.8% of Reykjavík's voters support the party. That would get them four representatives and the coalition nine representatives of fifteen in Reykjavik City Council.
